Yarn usage calculator
Calculate how much yarn you need when the pattern uses a different yarn.
How to convert yarn amounts when you switch yarn
When a pattern uses one yarn and you want to use another, you cannot count in skeins or grams alone, because yarns have different yardage. Count in metres instead. Find the pattern's total metres, and divide by your yarn's metres per skein to see how many skeins you need. Compare yarns at the same base weight, for example metres per 50 grams, before you calculate. Two yarns with the same weight can have very different yardage.
FAQ
How much yarn do I need if I switch yarn?
Take the pattern's total metres, and divide by the metres per skein of your own yarn. That tells you how many skeins you need, even if your yarn has a different yardage than the pattern yarn.
What does metres per 50 grams mean?
It is the yarn's yardage: how many metres there are in 50 grams. It is a useful measure for comparing yarns, because two yarns can weigh the same but have different lengths. The more metres per 50 grams, the thinner the yarn usually is.
